AS A MATTER OF FACT was created in collaboration with the stage magician Timothy Trust and the chemist Dr. Bernhard Michalke from Helmholtz Center Munich.
For the video, the realms of laboratory work and stage magic were mixed. The camera attentively follows a lab worker performing a series of tasks from classical magical tricks and classical chemistry experiments to poetic gestures and cinematic effects.
The plot of the video is inspired by the "opus magnum" of alchemy; the transformation of non-precious materials into gold, and the main steps of colour changes involved: from black to white to yellow to red (lat: nigredo, albedo, citrinitas, rubedo). Within the controlled cosmos of the lab, machines rumble, fluids change colour as fire and wind are unleashed bringing forwards the Faustian appearance of a dog.
By presenting the footage of these tasks without commentary, the video makes palpable not only the visual forms that distinguish science and magic in their cinematic representation, but also the practical overlap in techniques, gestures, and equipment that are the result of historical intersections between the two disciplines. The reiteration of the action in the form of an infinite video loop gradually amplifies the visual clues, slowly evolving the perception of the observed performance.
